What's Real?
With all the attention Hoodia Gordonii has received in the press lately, it's no surprise that many companies have jumped into the Hoodia business; some honest, some not. Very few companies are providing a high-quality pure South African Hoodia Gordonii that is free of fillers, additives and preservatives, and tested at an independent botanical laboratory for the presence of P57. What's Not?
Unfortunately, many products labeled as Hoodia have little or no actual Hoodia Gordonii in them. They often contain other types plants, even sawdust! Most products claiming to contain 1000, 1200, even 2000 milligrams of Hoodia are packed with fillers and additives. Some claim to be from 20:1 extracts, and even claim to be 20 times as potent. They offer forged or fake CITES permits. They post results from labs that don't use accepted industry standards for testing Hoodia for the presence of P57. Most Hoodia products sold at large retail chains and some of the biggest sellers on the Internet contain no real Hoodia.
Why Would They Do That?
Real South African Hoodia Gordonii is RARE, and its production and export are strictly controlled by the South African government. Hoodia Gordonii is an endangered species and covered by the Convention On International Trade In Endangered Species Of Wild Fauna And Flora. Because REAL South Africian Hoodia Gordonii is in short supply, it commands a worldwide price of $250 to $330 US per kilogram; this is why there is only a handful of real Hoodia Gordonii products on the market.
Too Good To Be True
A bottle of 90 capsules of 1200mg each equals 108 grams of 100% pure South African Hoodia Gordonii per bottle. That 108 grams divided into 1000 grams (1 Kilo) at the lowest market price of $250 per Kilo equals a cost of $27 per bottle. That's just the cost of the raw Hoodia powder and dosen't include any other costs, such as bottling and testing/certification. So how can these discount products be real? They're not.
What Should I Look For?
When buying Hoodia Gordonii products, look for a recent laboratory analysis that confirms the presence of P57 and uses accepted industry standards, such as Alkemists Pharmaceuticals in Costa Mesa, CA. Look on the product's label to confirm that Hoodia Gordonii powder from the stems is being used, and that no fillers or additives have been included. Beware of 20:1 or 10:1 extracts; try to find real certifications for them. You won't. Look closely at the ingredients of 1000mg,1200mg and 2000mg products. Beware of fillers such as green tea; they are used to expand the capsule weight.
